PLANDAMPF BOOK "FASZINATION SCHWARZE RIESEN"

The long awaited book about the history of Plandampf has been published.

The book covering all aspects of the 20 years of Plandampf is written by various authors and edited by Richard Goergen, of the Revierdampf Team. It is about 180 pages with about 200 photos. Almost all the text is in German, of course, apart from my contribution!

If you are interested please let me know so I can update you on the price and postage cost. The price in December 2010 was £21.50 and postage between £4 and £5.

I hope to see at least some of you at one of the next events.

Regards.
David

PLANDAMPF is the concept of getting sufficient enthusiasts to pay to use preserved steam locomotives to haul scheduled passenger and /or goods trains. This idea started in Germany in October 1990, and has seen a large number of highly successful events. David Sprackland from Andover, England, has been the key UK contact point for information on these events since they started and this page has been given to him so that his much appreciated work in this area can continue. Planned events will be featured here, along with certain Sonderzug being run by Plandampf organisers in Germany.

He can be contacted by E Mail:    plandampf (at) hotmail.co.uk    To reduce SPAM you will have to type the address using @ instead of the (a) shown.

David plans to use this page to replace the E mails he has sent to certain Plandampfers in the past. So if you want to keep in touch electronically with Plandampf please add this page to you "Favourites", and come back from time to time.

As full details of the next major Plandampf become available Plandampfers will be able to use a link on this page to use a printable application form that can be posted off to David along with your remittance. Please note that payments will still need to be made as before, i.e by cheque. So again, to make sure you can use this new service please add this page to your "Favourites".

Every effort will be made to try and post up to date and accurate information here. But any of the events below can be cancelled for a number of reasons: sometimes very close to the actual date the event is planned for. This could be because one or more of the locos becomes unserviceable, because insufficient people have paid for the event, because late changes have been imposed by DB or a host of other reasons. So be warned! And please also read the DISCLAIMER on this web page and also the Notes and Conditions for attendance at Plandampfs and other Events which must be accepted by anyone wishing to participate.

German DVD and Videos at a discount.
David has recently reconfirmed with Rio Grande and three other companies, (MIBA, Eisenbahn Journal and Eisenbahn Romantik), that now form the Verlagsgruppe Bahn, that he can still buy from their wide range of DVD's and Videos at a small discount. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this should contact David at his new E mail address:    plandampf (at) hotmail.co.uk
To reduce SPAM you will have to type the address using @ instead of the at shown above.

PLANDAMPF-NEWSLETTER   Dampfspektakel 2014 in Rheinland-Pfalz, May 28th to June 1st 2014

Dear friends of Plandampf,

The Revierdampf-Team wishes you a happy New Year, and would like to take the opportunity to inform you of a highlight in 2014. The federal state of Rhineland-Pfalz, the Zweckverband Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Süd and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) laden invite you to join a steam train festival around Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, namely the “Dampfspektakel 2014”, celebrating 25 years Linked Transport System Rhein-Neckar and 20 Years of Rheinland-Pfalz-Takt (interval timetable).

No participation fee will be charged for this event. You may travel on the steam trains with ordinary tickets, including the bargain day passes of VRN.

This is no “Plandampf” in the narrow sense of the word. We find it no longer possible to simply replace the scheduled diesel train with a steam locomotive and vintage coaches, as the modern timetables do not consider circumstances such as boarding at intermediate stations without automatic doors and the need to run round and service the loco at the terminus station. Instead, the trains at the Dampfspektakel 2014 will operate according to schedules for supplementary trains. The schedules follow the pattern of the standard timetable, but are adapted to the requirements of vintage trains sets e.g. allow for an extra minute at intermediate stops.

The list of locomotives has not been finalized yet, but you will find the engine shed at Neustadt very busy for sure. We expect the following steam locomotives: 01 118, 01 150, 01 1066 (all 4-6-2), 23 042 (2-6-2), 41 018, 41 360 (both 2-8-2), 52 6101, 52 7596 und 52 8134 (all 2-10-0). In addition, the diesel locomotives V200 116, 332 114, V36 127 and a railcar will operate. The locos will haul sets of vintage coaches, as in 2009.

The event will take place over five days from May 28 to June 1st, 2014.

On Wednesday May 28 justone train set is scheduled from Mannheim to Bundenthal.

On Thursday May 29 (Ascension day, apublic holiday in Germany) all available locomotives will be used on the lines from Neustadt toSinsheim, Heilbronn, Darmstadt, Bensheim, Worms and Alzey.

Friday May 30 will offer a reduced but top classservice with class 01 Pacifics on fast trains to Karlsruhe and Heilbronn.

On Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1 all available locos are employed again, this time on the lines from Neustadt to BadDuerkheim, Bad Kreuznach, Pirmasens, Landau, Karlsruhe and Germersheim.

The timetables and other general information are already published by VRN on the website Dampfspektakel.info In addition the Revierdampf-Team compiles a brochure that provides details such as the locomotive diagrams, operational information e.g. locos running tender first, and a list of recommended photo positions. The brochure will be offered for free and can be downloaded at Dampfspektakel.info when finalized. We intend to release the brochureapproximately 14 days before the event, in German and English language.

We recommend to book accomodation at Neustadt an der Weinstrasse or vicinity. All locomotives stay overnight at Neustadt shed. On all days the train diagrams originate and terminate at Neustadt. This time the Revierdampf-Team will not arrange an extra Plandampf day before or after the event. In contrast to previous years no scheduled freight trains in the area are suitable for steam haulage.

Furthermore we find ourselves in a position where the conditions with respect to funding and liability are too risky under the current legal status of the Revierdampf-Team. We have decided to postpone own activities for a while, watch the scene, support other actors and enjoy the remaining steam trains as much as our customers do. This may be the last newsletter by Revierdampf because our internet provider has increased the prices and reduced the service level.

The classic German Plandampf as introduced in the early 90ies is about to fade away. Take your chance in 2014 to see German steam in quantity and quality, and ride behind a class 01 Pacific along the vineyards of Pfalz and the Neckar river!

Your Revierdampf-Team

POLAND: Baltic Coast Steam Week  22 - 28 June 2014

This year will see a much-expanded programme of steam specials from Poznan in additon to the regular services from Wolsztyn, which now run to/from Leszno. The main attraction is a Baltic Coast Steam Week in June.

Starting out of Poznan early on Sunday 22nd June and returning there late on Saturday 28th, the programme of daily trains is based on Kolobrzeg and features runs along the coast to resorts such as Darlowo and Ustka, plus inland locations in the region. The highlightsare long distance runs on two of the days to Szczecin/Swinoujscie and Gdynia/Gdansk.

In total, including the runs from/to Poznan, the week will see just shy of 2000 miles of steam haulage. Ol49 69 and Pt47 65 are in the frame as traction.

Whilst this isn't, strictly speaking, a Plandampf since the trains are specials, it has all the key features and in many ways is better than many recent Plandampfs, which have offered little or nothing for riders.

The Baltic Coast Week offers trains from 0800/0900 to 2000/2100 each day, with opportunities on most days to take a break, for beer or lunch, and rejoin a later train. The extensive programme should also appeal to photters and the long evenings at this time of year could produce some attractive conditions in the dusk 'golden hour'.

An attractive package is on offer - travel on all trains, including the runs from/to Poznan, plus B&B for six nights near Kolobrzeg station, for £450. This is based on sharing a twin room, but single rooms will be available for around £480.

To register your interest and recieve further information when available send an email to David Sprackland via plandampf(at)hotmail.co.uk
